Podcasts for Mindful Parenting
A frequent question asked by parents with whom we work is “How can I be a better parent?” These parents are busy with work and family life and don’t always have the time to pick up a parenting book. While they may talk about various successes they have in parenting, inevitably there are feelings of regret or insecurity about handling certain situations. Podcasts represent a perfect way to make changes in parenting, whether it be developing ways to be in the moment with your child, become a better listener, or learn to set appropriate limits. This summer check out the following podcasts:
Do you ever feel that the current stage your child is in seems to be lasting forever? (Think about those tantrums at the grocery store). Then, when you have finished that stage and reflect back, does it feel like that period was actually a fleeting moment and you long to return to that stage? This podcast, hosted by Hillary Frank, offers “stories about the surprises and absurdities of raising other humans – and being raised by them.” The simultaneous challenges and joys of parenthood will capture your hearts and minds.
Respected author and parent advisor, Janet Lansbury, addresses parenting questions regarding parenting topics focused on infants and toddlers. Janet does a wonderful job informing and inspiring parents through her philosophy of Respectful Parenting. In Janet’s words, “My hope in sharing advice through my podcasts is to clarify and fill in some of the gaps. Engaging with young children with respect is still, unfortunately, countercultural and can feel counterintuitive, so we need all the reminders, support and modeling we can get.”
If you are a parent who enjoys learning and researching all you can about parenting but just don’t have the time to get a degree in Child Psychology, this is the podcast for you! Jen Lumanlan is a mom who enjoyed the research process so much that she decided to get a Master’s in Psychology with a focus on Child Development. In this podcast, Jen shares her valuable research on child development topics in a manner that all parents can understand and benefit from. Jen says, “I started the podcast to be the resource I wished was already available: a critical view of scientific research on child development that helps us to be better parents. ”
The tagline for this show states “The best predictor of a child’s well-being is a parent’s self-understanding.” Cohosts Cathy Cassani Adams and Todd Adams provide “insight, stories, and humor” from two unique perspectives, an emotional mom and a logical, practical dad. You are sure to enjoy listening to them discuss various topics on parenting in a respectful and mindful way.
Conscious Parenting for Confident and Successful Kids (Build Great Minds)
Rhea Lalla is a parenting coach, speaker, author, and parent. Her podcast episodes delve more deeply into helping parents be more conscious about how they communicate with their children in order to help raise confident, loving, and happy families. Rhea says, “”I believe that our child’s best self, hangs in the balance of our own transformation. The more we understand our own inner mind, the more we can both understand and connect deeply to our kids.”
Mindful Parenting In A Messy World
Modeling is one of the most important methods of parenting we can offer our children. It is so important that we take the time to tune into our own consciousness and intention so that we can be the best we can be for our children. This podcast focuses more on mindfulness practices as a skill for parents. Host Michelle Gale shares, “My intention is to share a collection of supportive conversations, meditations, and nuggets of practical wisdom to help you embrace the parenting journey as your greatest potential for growth.”
A podcast geared toward moms/women but could be enlightening for dads/men as well. Host Jen Riday says of the show, “I believe the greatest gift we as moms can give our kids is our own happiness. We have to take care of ourselves, fill our cups, and live a life filled with meaning and purpose so our kids know how to do it themselves when they’re adults one day.” Topics range from intimacy, to self-care, to mindful living.
At the Portsmouth Neuropsychology Center we hope these pod casts offer you moments of reflection, humor, and enriching knowledge as you navigate being a mindful parent.
