There has been a decline in the number of Americans receiving psychotherapy along with an increase in the use of psychotropic medication in those who are treated in outpatient settings. Despite the fact that psychotherapy has been found to be as effective as medication for psychiatric illnesses such as major depression and anxiety disorders, less than 6% of NIMH’s research allotment goes towards psychotherapy clinical trials research. Furthermore, the majority of Americans prefer talk therapy to taking meds.
